First Graders had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of environmental activities in the Sheldon Nature Center this year.  We were fortunate enough to have guests from U.W.-Oshkosh come to help with two Big Days.

The first Big Day was centered around frogs and turtles.  We  learned about these creatures, saw them up close and even held a few of them in our hands.

Our second Big Day centered around our science unit on solids, liquids, and gases.  Seeing the cap pop off a film canister that was filled with dry ice was a HUGE hit with first graders!  We also had two guest speakers come to talk about how maple syrup is made and teach us about white-tail deer.

The Sheldon Nature Area provided first grade with many opportunities to tie our science curriculum into our natural environment.  We practiced using thermometers in different areas of the Nature Area, observed and drew pictures of the pond, forest and grassland areas.  We celebrated Earth Day by making peanut butter pinecones for the creatures that live there, went on a senses scavenger hunt, worked with cross-grade level buddies and used digital cameras.

All first graders kept a Nature Notebook to document their visits to Sheldon’s, keeping track of the many learning opportunities that occurred.
